The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences aims to examine the nature of disciplinary practices, and the interdisciplinary practices that arise in the context of ‘real world’ applications. It also interrogates what constitutes ‘science’ in a social context, and the connections between the social and other sciences.

The journal discusses the distinctive disciplinary practices within the sciences of the social, and examines examples of these practices. In order to define and exemplify disciplinarity, the journal fosters dialogue ranging from the broad and speculative to the microcosmic and empirical. In considering the varied interdisciplinary, trans-disciplinary or multidisciplinary work across and between the social, natural and applied sciences, the journal showcases interdisciplinary practices in action. The focus of papers ranges from the finely grained and empirical, to wide-ranging multidisciplinary and trans-disciplinary practices, to perspectives on knowledge and method.

The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences is peer-reviewed, supported by rigorous, criterion-referenced article ranking and qualitative commentary processes, ensuring that only intellectual work of significance is published.

The Interdisciplinary Social Sciences community publishes into a family of journals. This consists of a series of thematically focused journals, as well as a highlights journal that republishes a selection of articles for the thematic journals. All papers accepted for publication will appear in one of the following thematic journals:

  • The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Organizational Studies
  • The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social and Community Studies
  • The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Educational Studies
  • The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Civic and Political Studies
  • The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies
  • The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Global Studies
  • The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies
  • The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies in Communication

Each of these journals has the subtitle: ‘A section of The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences’.

The highlights journal consists only of reprints of articles from the thematic journals. It contains top-ranked articles and works by invited contributions, including plenary speakers from the International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences. This is not a second publication of an article. As the subtitle of the highlights journal clearly indicates, this journal only consists of reprints.

Authors can request which of the thematic journals they would prefer for the publication of their article. Alternatively, when the author does not opt to make a selection, the Common Ground editorial team will curate each paper into the appropriate thematic journal.
